This blog was born on December 6, 2008, out of a desire to give the Moriscos—whose history has often been forgotten, whose memory was fragmented, and whose heritage extends through the details of Maghrebi, Spanish, and Mediterranean life and beyond—a voice and a presence in the digital space.
Over the years, the blog has grown into a large chest of knowledge, questions, and conversations.
Here, I publish about the Moriscos in Tunisia in particular, and around the world in general: their history, migrations, itineraries, the memories they carried, the languages they spoke, and a heritage that continues to live on in music, clothing, food, language, customs, and more.
This space brings together scholarship, storytelling, poetry, and illustration, merging personal passion with specialized knowledge. I strive to present history in a language and style accessible to all, without losing its depth or diversity.
About Me
My full name is Houssam Eddine bin Salah bin al-Bashir bin Salem bin Salah bin al-Hajj Salem bin al-Sheikh, known as Chachia al-Khalladi.
I might be of Morisco descent… or maybe not. And that is not what matters.
I was born on a cold winter day in 1984 in the town of Beni Khalled in northern Tunisia, on the plains of Grombalia in the Cap Bon region. I am married and a father to a daughter. My hobbies are many—though stamp collecting is certainly not one of them! I love reading novels and poetry, and I enjoy listening to all forms of beautiful music: from mezoued to rap, from Arabic music to classical and contemporary Western styles. I am also fond of watching various kinds of films and documentaries, especially those related to the Second World War. My favorite international author is Miguel de Cervantes, and my favorite Tunisian writer is Ali al-Da‘aji.
I hold a PhD in Early Modern History (2014) and a Habilitation in History (2023). My doctoral dissertation received the Ibn Battuta Prize.
I work as an Associate Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Tunis, and as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Harvard University for the academic year 2025–2026.
My research focuses primarily on the Moriscos, as well as on Sephardic Jews, and on the relationships between the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghreb during the early modern period. I love working with manuscripts, archival documents, and primary sources, and I enjoy deciphering them and listening directly to the voices of the historical actors they preserve. I am also deeply interested in tracing how historical narratives evolve from the moment of the events themselves to the present day.
I am the author of The Morisco Landscape: Expulsion Narratives in Modern Spanish Thought (2023) and Sephardim and Moriscos: The Journey of The Expulsion and Installation in the Maghreb (1492-1756): Stories and Itineraries (2015), and editor of Tunisia, the Mediterranean, and the Moriscos (2023), and coordinator of the book Entre las Orillas de Dos Mundos (2017). I also published a critical edition of al-Hajarī’s Nāṣir al-Dīn ʿalā Qawm al-Kāfirīn (2015).
My work has been published by major international academic presses such as Brill and Routledge, and in leading scholarly journals such as Sefarad, Hespéris-Tamuda, and Cahiers Tunisiens. You can view and download my academic publications from this link.
My research has received multiple awards, including the 2024 Sheikh Zayed Book Award, and the 2020 Young Researcher Award in History from the Tunisian Academy (Beit al-Hikma).
I have delivered lectures and seminars at various universities and research centers, including Columbia University in New York, Harvard University, Queen Mary University of London, the Center for Social Sciences in Madrid, the Research Center in Taiwan, NYU Abu Dhabi, and others.
This blog is my humble attempt to bring history closer to the reader, and to make knowledge a shared space between scholars, enthusiasts, the curious, and lovers of stories.

وُلدت هذه المدوّنة في 6 ديسمبر 2008 من رغبةٍ في أن يكون للموريسكيين—بتاريخهم المنسي، وذاكرتهم الممزّقة، وتراثهم الممتدّ في تفاصيل الحياة المغاربية والإسبانية والمتوسّطية وما وراءها—صوتٌ وحضورٌ في الفضاء الرقمي.
على مدى السنوات، صارت المدوّنة أشبه بـ صندوقٍ كبير للمعرفة والسؤال والنقاش.
هنا، أنشُر عن الموريسكيين في تونس خصوصًا، وفي العالم عمومًا؛ عن تاريخهم وهجرتهم ومساراتهم، عن الذاكرة التي حملوها، عن اللغات التي تكلموها، وعن تراثٍ لا يزال حاضرًا في الموسيقى واللباس والطعام واللغة والعادات وغيرها.
هي مساحة تجمع بين الأكاديميا والقصص والأشعار والرسومات، وتدمج بين الشغف الشخصي والمعرفة المتخصصة. أحاول أن أقدّم التاريخ بلغةٍ وأسلوبٍ يفهمهما الجميع، من دون أن يفقد عمقه وتعدّده.
عنّي
اسمي السداسي هو حسّام الدين بن صالح بن البشير بن سالم بن صالح بن الحاج سالم بن الشيخ، شهر شاشية الخلادي.
قد أكون ذو أصل موريسكي… وربما لا…وهذا أمر غير مُهم.
وُلدتُ في شتاءٍ بارد من سنة 1984 بمدينة بني خلاد شمال تونس، في سهل قرمبالية بالوطن القبلي. أنا متزوّج ووالد لابنة. هواياتي كثيرة، لكن لا يدخل بينها جمع الطوابع البريدية! بل أهوى مطالعة الكتب والروايات، والأشعار وأحبّ الاستماع إلى كلّ أنواع الموسيقى الجميلة—من المزود إلى الراب، ومن الموسيقى العربية إلى الموسيقات العالمية الكلاسيكية والمعاصرة—كما أحبّ مشاهدة مختلف أنواع الأفلام السينمائية والوثائقية، خصوصًا تلك المتعلّقة بالحرب العالمية الثانية. كاتبي العالمي المفضّل هو ميغيل دي ثيربانتس، والتونسي علي الدّعاجي.
أحمل دكتوراه في التاريخ الحديث (2014) والتأهيل الجامعي في التاريخ (2023)، وقد حازَت أطروحتي جائزة ابن بطوطة.
أشتغل أستاذًا مُحاضرًا في التاريخ الحديث بجامعة تونس، وأستاذًا مُحاضرًا زائرًا بجامعة هارفارد للعام الأكاديمي 2025–2026.
تدور أبحاثي حول الموريسكيين أساسًا، وكذلك اليهود السفارديم، والعلاقات بين شبه الجزيرة الإيبيرية وبلاد المغرب خلال بدايات الفترة الحديثة. أحبّ الاشتغال على المصادر والمخطوطات والأرشيفات، وأستمتع بفكّ رموزها والاستماع مباشرةً لأصوات الفاعلين فيها. كما يشغلني تحليل تطوّر السرديات والروايات التاريخية من زمن وقوع الأحداث إلى يومنا هذا.
أنا مؤلّف كتاب «المشهد الموريسكي: سرديات الطرد في الفكر الإسباني الحديث» (2023)، وكتاب «السفارديم والموريسكيون: رحلة التهجير والتوطين في بلاد المغرب» (2015) ومحرّر كتابي «تونس والمتوسّط والموريسكيون» (2023) (بالإسبانية والفرنسية والإنجليزية)، و«بين ضفاف عالمين…» (2017) (بالإسبانية). كما أنجزتُ التحقيق العلمي لكتاب أحمد بن قاسم الحجري «ناصر الدين على قوم الكافرين» (2015).
نُشرت أعمالي لدى دور نشر عالمية مثل Brill وRoutledge، وفي مجلات علمية مرموقة مثل Sefarad وHespéris-Tamuda وكراسات تونسية. أنظر وقُم بتحميل منشوراتي من على هذا الرابط.
حازت أبحاثي جوائز عدّة، منها جائزة الشيخ زايد للكتاب لعام 2024، وجائزة أفضل باحث شاب في التاريخ (2020) من بيت الحكمة بتونس.
قدّمتُ ندوات ومحاضرات في جامعات ومراكز بحث من بينها جامعة كولومبيا في نيويورك، وجامعة هارفارد، وجامعة ماري كوين في إنجلترا، ومركز العلوم الاجتماعية بمدريد، ومركز البحوث في تايوان، وجامعة نيويورك أبوظبي، وغيرها.
هذه المدوّنة هي محاولتي المتواضعة لـ تقريب التاريخ من القارئ، ولجعل المعرفة مساحة مشتركة بين الأكاديمي والمهتمّ والفضولي وعاشق الحكايات.
